19th August 2006 - Crich
Tramway Museum
19 days into August, and at last I am taking
my first shots of the month. These came courtesy of a family day out to the National Tramway
Museum at Crich in Derbyshire. The weather was iffy for most of the day, but there was the odd
flash of sunshine every now and then.
26th August 2006 - Tripple
Choppers
A Pathfinder Railtour to Kettering featuring
three class 20's in multi. There was little of hope of a sunny shot with this
one, despite the fact that the tour could be easily chased, but the thrash from
the three 20's as they climbed Bagworth bank will stick in my mind for a long
time.
28th August 2006 - Cloudy
Crompton and Crich Tramway Village
In the morning, I went out for the
Harringworth shuttles which featured 33025 and 4965 'Rood Ashton Hall'. Having
stood for half an hour in sunshine, the 33 turned up shortly after the light had
plummeted by about 2 stops, and then I managed the steamer in full sun but with
the smoke drifting across and compromising the shot. At this point, I decided it
was going to be one of those days, so I cut my losses and went to the National
Tramway Museum at Crich where they had no less than 11 trams out.
29th August 2006 - The Hunt
For Tram 31
During a visit to Crich, I purchased a
DVD about Leicester Trams which showed Leicester Tram 31 surviving on a farm in
Leicestershire. This had been filmed in 1989, but I was curious as to whether it
still existed and did a little bit of local research to see if I could locate
it. I eventually found it round the back of a farm slowly rotting away amongst
the vegetation. Alongside it was a debris field which contained parts of tram 27
which stood alongside tram 31 for many years. At one time, there were quite a
few tram bodies on this farm in use as chicken coups and dry storage areas for
cattle feed. Many thanks to Rob Foxon and John Cross for their assistance in
locating tram 31, and a big thanks to the farmer for allowing us onto his
property to take photographs. Please note I am not prepared to list the exact
location of this tram or the name of the farm as it is on private property.
