Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway
Many years ago, most large towns and cities in the UK had a tramway system, and all except one of these were abandoned with the development of the motor bus. In recent years there has been an upsurge in tramway activity in the UK with new light rail systems built in Manchester, Sheffield, Croydon, Nottingham and the West Midlands. Blackpool was the only town in the UK that never competely did away with it's tramway, and Blackpool's trams have operated continuously since 1885. My first encounter with Blackpool trams was as a small boy when my parents took me to visit the Blackpool Illuminations. This of course involved several tram rides, and to me they were something completely unique and possessed an atmosphere all of their own. After I started taking photographs, Blackpool was always on my to do list, but despite a day trip in 1995, I foolishly stayed away until I went on holiday to Blackpool in July 2006. I was pleased to discover that even in 2006, Blackpool trams still have that unique magic that attracted me to them all those years ago. Since that holiday, I have been back several times, and intend to keep going back to record the ever changing scene (and believe me, it does change quite a lot).
